Why Permanent Boat Markings Are Critical
Every recreational and commercial boat manufactured or imported since 1972 must carry a Hull Identification Number (HIN), a 12-character code assigned by the U.S. Coast Guard and permanently marked on the upper starboard transom. The HIN functions as the vessel’s identifier for registration, insurance, theft recovery and recall response. Removing or altering it is a federal violation.
In addition to the hull, components such as engine blocks, propeller shafts, navigation panels and safety equipment require serial numbers, part numbers and compliance information embedded into the surface. These marks must remain readable through repeated saltwater exposure, abrasive cleaning and years of mechanical wear. At Telesis Technologies, Inc., we offer solutions that create a permanent mark just below the material surface and cannot be peeled off or chemically removed.
